Report of “Advanced Skill Lab Critical Care Competency Workshop”

The Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, 沙巴体育 College of Nursing (MCON), 沙巴体育 Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), in collaboration with the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine, 沙巴体育 branch, organized a two-day “Advanced Skill Lab Critical Care Competency Workshop” for faculty and PG Nursing students (NPCC & MSc) on May 31 & June 1, 2024, at the Medical Simulation Centre, 6th floor Search Library, MAHE 沙巴体育. The workshop began with a formal inaugural program at 9:00 on May 31st, and Dr Sharath Kumar Rao K, Pro Vice Chancellor-Health Sciences MAHE, 沙巴体育, was the chief guest. He delivered an inspiring speech highlighting the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing health sciences, emphasizing the importance of such workshops and the need for upskilling competencies. Dr Jyothi Chakrabarty, Professor & Head, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, MCON 沙巴体育, welcomed the gathering. Dr Judith A Noronha, Dean, MCON 沙巴体育, also delivered a compelling speech on the vital role of nursing in healthcare, emphasizing the need for ongoing education and compassionate patient care to meet the evolving challenges in the field. Dr Vishal Shanbhag, Associate Professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, KMC 沙巴体育, provided an overview of the workshop.
The two-day workshop began with a session on airway assessment and management by Dr Souvik Chaudhuri, Associate Professor, Dept. of Critical Care Medicine, KMC 沙巴体育, followed by ABG interpretation by Dr Shwethapriya R., Professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, KMC, 沙巴体育. Dr Sagar M S Associate Professor Department of Critical Care Medicine, KMC, 沙巴体育, took an engaging session on central line insertion. An interactive session on Advanced Cardiac Life Support was delivered by Dr. Daisy J Lobo, Associate Professor, MCON 沙巴体育. Four skill training stations, named ABG interpretation, central line insertion, airway assessment and management, and advanced cardiac life support, were conducted in the afternoon, where participants were allowed to have hands-on experience practising the skills under the expert supervision of resource personnel.
The second day’s session began with Dr. Vimal Krishnan, Additional Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, KMC 沙巴体育, on the topic of trauma assessment. He led an engaging and dynamic session, seamlessly integrating theoretical concepts with practical, scenario-based learning. Ms. Teena Sharon, Nurse Practitioner in Critical Care, Kasturba Hospital, 沙巴体育, presented a detailed session on organ transplantation, including the medical procedures, ethical considerations and patient care. A session on POCUS for shock was presented by Dr. Vishal Shanbhag, Associate Professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, KMC 沙巴体育, with several real-life examples suggesting that it provides valuable knowledge and practical insights into using ultrasound technology to diagnose and manage shock effectively. Another experiential session on ICD insertion was done by him to enhance the skills of the participants. In the afternoon, workstations on ultrasound simulation, ECG interpretation, drug calculation, and chest x-ray interpretation were conducted by Dr Vishal Shanbhag, Associate Professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, KMC 沙巴体育, Dr Melita Sheilini, Associate Professor, MCON 沙巴体育, Dr. Soumya Christabel, Assistant Professor (Sr scale), MCON 沙巴体育; and Dr. Shalini G. Nayak, Assistant Professor (Sr scale), MCON 沙巴体育, respectively.
The workshop benefited 36 participants from nine different institutions in different states of India. The workshop was also much appreciated by the participants for enhancing their knowledge and skills. This workshop was centred on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3 & 4, i.e. Good health & well-being and Quality education, respectively. The event was organized and coordinated by Dr Shalini G Nayak, Assistant Professor, Medical Surgical Nursing, MCON, MAHE 沙巴体育.
