All Things Fashion – Interaction with Editor-in-chief, Shefalee Vasudev

September 20, 2024

On September 20, 2024, MIC hosted an engaging Q&A session with Shefalee Vasudev, a prominent expert in the Indian fashion industry with over 30 years of experience. The event featured Vasudev, the editor-in-chief of The Voice of Fashion—a leading digital magazine—who is also a cultural commentator and trained narrative therapist. Throughout the session, she provided in-depth insights into the current landscape of Indian fashion, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the making of unconventional fashion trends and the realities shaping the industry today.

Alongside the second-year students of the Bachelor’s in Media and Communication program who attended the session, the event was graced by the presence of Dr. Shubha H. S., Head of BA Programs at MIC, and Assistant Professor Manikandan C. Throughout the interactive session, Shefalee Vasudev continuously underscored the critical role of investigative journalism in fashion writing, pointing out how the line between fashion content creation and authentic fashion journalism is becoming increasingly blurred. She conveyed to aspiring journalists to prioritize depth and analysis over surface-level reporting. Drawing from her vast, three-decade-long career in the industry, Vasudev captivated the audience with vivid analogies and personal stories, including her experiences with celebrated fashion designers, offering students a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of fashion in India. Vasudev also provided practical advice, encouraging students to save up throughout the year to invest in at least one luxury item, emphasizing that indulging in such experiences should not be viewed as frivolous, but rather as an appreciation of artistry and craftsmanship. She also shared valuable tips on how to apply for internships in the fashion industry, encouraging the audience to gain hands-on experience.

The event concluded with a heartfelt moment as Dr. Shubha H. S. presented Shefalee Vasudev with a memento of appreciation, followed by a group photograph that included students, faculty members, and the guest speaker. The session was not only inspiring but also deeply enriching, leaving the audience with much to ponder on.
