MIV is one of the premier virology research centers in India, with the capacity to diagnose infectious diseases with different viral etiologies. MIV provides state of?an art diagnostic facility to diagnose viral diseases while supporting public health services in disease surveillance and outbreak response, contributing to global health security. MIV has a NABL-accredited lab under the ISO standards- 15189: 2012. MIV has over 32 diagnostic tests under the NABL scope. It also conducts research in basic and applied virology, epidemiology, diagnosis, vaccines, and therapeutics. MIV is also the NVBDCP Apex Referral Laboratory for Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis, and Chikungunya under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India programs. MIV offers Ph.D. (Virology) and Master of Science in Clinical Virology programs.
MIV, as one of the best institutes in India, has the platform for cross-cutting in-depth research in the field of Influenza viruses, Herpes simplex viruses, Enteroviruses, Human papillomavirus, etc., and Neglected Tropical Diseases. The varied areas of research mainly focus on improving clinical diagnosis of viral diseases, infectious disease surveillance (influenza, hepatitis, chikungunya, dengue, and cervical cancer), and epidemiological studies including molecular epidemiology of emerging and re-emerging viral diseases. The current thrust areas of research at MIV are focused on developing various strategies for newer and alternative treatment (prophylactic and therapeutic) modalities, platforms for testing antivirals, immunological profiling of viral diseases, and the development of diagnostic kits
MIV also supports the state and national health services for outbreak investigation. It has been instrumental in confirming more than 200 viral outbreaks. MIV is also a part of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) by WHO and Global Virus Network (GVN).
Our vision is to set global benchmarks in diagnostics, treatment, and prevention of viral diseases by fostering collaborations, promoting innovation, and adhering to the highest standards of excellence. We hope to transform virology on a global scale
