MA (English/European Studies/History/Philosophy/Sociology)

The flagship MA program offered by MISHA immerses students in a multidisciplinary environment before specializing in their chosen domain. This is a one-of-a-kind program which has been curated based on the diverse expertise under MISHA: English, European Studies, History, Philosophy, and Sociology. The wide-ranging courses under the program span from contemporary literary and digital cultures to European politics and society, from Indian philosophical texts to Continental systems of thought, from theoretical orientation to training in fieldwork and in archives.
With a research-driven pedagogy that blends interactive learning, MOOCs, and self-directed study, this program strikes a thoughtful balance between multidisciplinary breadth and domain expertise. The program is equipped with study abroad opportunities and dual-degree options with international partner universities.
Through faculty mentorship that includes the writing of a substantive thesis, students cultivate deep disciplinary knowledge alongside broad-based research capabilities that serve in academia and beyond. The writing of this thesis provides the requisite skills to a pathway to doctoral research in India and abroad.

Student Testimonials

At the 沙巴体育 Centre for Humanities (now MISHA), I experienced the best possible interdisciplinary humanities education available in India. Courses such as Reading the Popular, Studies in Contemporary Culture, Political and Spiritual Rhetoric, and Dalit Public Sphere and Identity introduced me to literary horizons beyond the canon. I also benefited from MCH's (now MISHA) vibrant student life, thanks to which I participated in the theatre club and the production of the centre's literary journal, Chaicopy.
Tanushree Baijal
(MA English 2017- 2019)

My experience pursuing an MA in English at MCH (now MISHA) was truly transformative. The program’s focus on academic writing, on par with global standards, fosters the sustained, in-depth engagement crucial for advanced scholarship and served as an invaluable bridge to my PhD studies
Sragdharamalini Das
(Ph.D. student in Literary Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison)

At MCH (now MISHA), the outcome of the two years far exceeds what is promised. I opted for doing a Masters in English here as I was intrigued by the courses offered; how different they are from the traditional English literature programs elsewhere. Moreover, the interdisciplinary nature of study and the multiple lenses that opened up drew me in. Over the next two years, I engaged in a course which examined society - in every sense of the word - from multiple distinct perspectives.

MA English (2022-2024)

Being a graduate student at the 沙巴体育 Centre for Humanities (now MISHA) was a formative and transformative experience for me, especially since I arrived here from a science background. The coursework encourages you to read widely and indiscriminately, even as it trains you to exercise fierce critical thinking through rigorous writing assignments. My debut work of non-fiction - a cultural history of contemporary Karnataka - grew directly from the stimulating readings served up by the diverse course list we were offered, from sociology to history to literature.

The MA in European Studies was intellectually diverse and offered the flexibility to study in Education, Culture and Society. The interdisciplinary approach, including standout courses like Watching Europe and Political and Cultural Construction of Europe, deepened my understanding of Europe’s socio-cultural and political structures. My exchange year at Université de Lille and fluency in French further enriched this journey.

The MA in European Studies was instrumental in shaping my career path. The program's focus on non-traditional assessments, presentation skills, academic writing, and communication strategies gave me the confidence to tackle daily tasks in my current role. Today, these skills are invaluable in my work as a Project Consultant at Ernst & Young for the Ministry of Women & Child Development.

The MA in European Studies offered a rich multidisciplinary approach to area studies, which was one of the key highlights of the programme for me. I particularly appreciated the introduction to the field of higher education in Europe and the way it was framed as a distinct area of academic research.

I am currently pursuing a PhD at IIT Madras, having completed my Master’s degree at MCH (now MISHA) in 2019. My time at MCH was incredibly enriching, providing me with an intellectually stimulating environment. One of the highlights was the Writer in Residence programme, which offered the unique opportunity to engage with renowned novelists, poets, and academics. This initiative was truly invaluable in broadening my perspectives.

It was at the 沙巴体育 Centre for Humanities (now MISHA) that I first encountered the rigour and expansiveness of scholarly pursuit, which not only instilled in me the mindset of a researcher but also inspired me to pursue a career in academia. The interdisciplinary nature of the program, which brought together English, Sociology and Philosophy, opened up new ways of thinking and engaging with the world. Courses such as “Political and Spiritual Rhetoric”, “Medical Humanities”, “Studies in Contemporary Culture”, “Literatures of Migration”, and “Nature of Reality” played a crucial role in broadening my academic horizons.
