About the Department
The Department of Urology is one of the oldest departments in Konkan coast. This department was inaugurated by the Doyens in the field of Urology in 1974 at KMC, 沙巴体育.
?
Urology?is the surgical specialty that focuses on the male & female urinary tract and on the reproductive system of males. Medical professionals specializing in the field of Urology are called Urologists?and are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with urological disorders. The organs covered by Urology include the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder,?urethra, and the male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis). It is diverse subject and very important in the medical field since diseases of the prostate affect most males over 50 years of age and most patients in Indian subcontinent develops urinary tract stones. Urology is closely related to, and in some cases overlaps with, the medical fields of Oncology, Nephrology, Gynecology, Andrology,?Pediatric Surgery, Gastroenterology and endocrinology. Other important disease dealt with by urology is malignancies of the kidney, bladder and prostate. Apart from this urology also includes renal transplant which is becoming increasingly common due to the rise of HTN and DM.
?
The M. Ch Urology training is the first ever higher training program in the state of Karnataka. The first batch of super speciality MCh Urology started in 1977. It started as a singular urology resident in 1977 to currently six residents per year. After completing residency in Urology, the candidate will be able to perform basic endourological procedures for calculus disease and benign prostatic enlargement. They will also be able to perform open and laparoscopic procedures like nephrectomy and partial nephrectomy. They will be well versed in managing pediatric urological procedures including pyeloplasty, hypospadias, and ureteric reimplantation. Candidate will have a general exposure of most subspecialties within urology, including reconstructive urology, transplant surgery, endourology, uro-oncology, female and functional urology, pediatric urology and andrology.

Investigation Armamentarium
?????? Ultrasonography: Department has its own 4 ultrasound machines available round the clock and performed by trained urologist
?????? Uroflowmetry: Diagnostic investigation that helps in evaluating?patients with lower urinary tract symptoms.
?????? Radiological investigations like Retrograde Urethrogram, Micturating Cysto-Urethrogram and Intravenous Urography.
?????? Prostatic Biopsy for diagnosis of Carcinoma prostate.
?????? Urodynamic study: Pressure flow studies - to evaluate the real time bladder function in patients with neurogenic bladder and dysfunctional voiding.
?????? Latest scanning machines for diagnosing urological conditions includes CT, MRI, PET-CT, Bone scan, Radionuclide study imaging.
?????? Cystoscopy & Ureteroscopy
?
Stone Surgery
?????? Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the technique for treating stones located within the kidney. It involves keyhole surgery that is performed through a small incision in the skin .The stones are fragmented and removed by LASER or Pneumatic Lithoclast or Ultrasound energy.
?????? Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy (URSL)/ Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS): Procedure through normal urinary tract (without any skin incision) to break apart stones in the urinary tract, which is done with a Semi-rigid or Flexible Ureteroscope.
?????? Cystolithotripsy – Procedure for treating bladder stones.
Uro-Oncology
?????? The department of Genito-urinary surgery regularly carries out definitive surgeries for all urological malignancies like Renal tumors, Bladder tumors, Adrenal tumors, Ureteral malignancies, Prostate cancer, Penile cancer & Testicular cancers.
?????? The department is well-known for its expertise in radical cancer surgeries such as Radical Nephrectomy, Retroperitoneal Lymphadenectomy, Radical Cystectomy, Radical Prostatectomy and various types of complex urinary diversions including continent pouches.
?
Lower Urinary Tract Endoscopy
?????? Cystoscopy, Visual Internal Urethrotomy (V.I.U), Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP) and Bladder tumours (TURBT).
?
Laparoscopic Urological Surgeries
?????? All types of laparoscopic urological surgeries are performed in our department.
?
Access surgery
?????? AV Fistula?creation for hemodialysis in CKD patients.
Reconstructive Urology
?????? All types of simple and complex “Urethroplasty” procedures with different tissue graft and flap techniques for urethral stricture disease.
?????? Major bladder reconstruction – urinary diversion, continent catheterizable stomas (Mitrofanoff, Monti), augmentation cystoplasty.
?????? Major ureter reconstruction - Boari flap, Psoas hitch, trans-ureteroureterostomy.
?????? Complex pyeloplasty
?????? Bladder and bladder neck repair for trauma and iatrogenic injuries.
?

?????? Epispadias repair
?????? Pyeloplasty
?????? Ureteric re-implantation
?????? Orchidopexy
Renal Transplantation
?????? The Uro-Nephrology Centre collectively oversees a very successful ongoing “Live Related Donor Renal Transplantation” program, with 23 Computerized Dialysis Machines available (the first Renal Transplant was made in Oct 1993). This program provides a relatively affordable package that includes donor kidney harvesting and recipient surgery. So far, more than 500 kidney transplants have been performed.
?????? Renal Transplantation includes ?
?????? Related Donor transplantation
?????? Brain Dead Donor transplantation
?????? ABO Incompatible Donor transplantation

"It is science alone that can solve the problems of hunger and poverty, of insanitation and illiteracy, of superstition and deadening custom and tradition, of vast resources running to waste, or a rich country inhabited by starving people... Who indeed could afford to ignore science today? At every turn we have to seek its aid... The future belongs to science and those who make friends with science."

?????? 沙巴体育 is a pursuit of knowledge and is limitless. At Department of Urology we pursue research to understand the intricacies and maladies of the human body and its interaction with nature, find cure to ailments, improve quality of living and enhance teaching.
?????? 沙巴体育 at Department of Urology is a dedicated team work led by the faculty of the Institute as Principal Investigators (PI) with the assistance of senior residents, postdoctoral fellows and undergraduates and technical staff. The department aims to provide modest intramural financial support to investigators for initiating research.
?????? Our research themes broadly include various aspects of endourology, urooncology, andrology, urogynecology, neurourology, urological infections and other aspects of urology. The themes are not mutually exclusive and the PIs carry interdisciplinary research with national and international collaborations aiming towards novel, low cost tools for becoming the torch bearer of health care for the state of Karnataka as well as the national population.
?????? Our research is facilitated by state of art instrumentation including most advanced urological instruments including various nephroscopes; rigid, semirigid and flexible ureteroscopes, Ho-YAG laser, Urodynamic Study machine.
?????? The hospital has a digital record of all the personal, demographic and medical details of the patients which helps in accurate prospective and retrospective data collection. The department has its own library which provides the students access to various books, journals as well as the latest updates pertaining to them.
?????? At Department of Urology, postgraduate students are encouraged to identify a problem in research and address it with help of a mentor in the Institute.
?????? The aim of postgraduate research is to develop critical thinking and expand academic knowledge, explore research techniques, inculcate team spirit and time management, identify career interests, establish contacts with faculty and presenting at research conferences.
?????? The department has published various research articles covering various aspects of urology in many acclaimed national and international journals with many articles being published each year by students and faculty.?
